ABOUT
Prismala are a Berlin-based four-piece blending neo-soul warmth, indie pop charm, and the energy of alternative rock. What began as a high school dream in 2016 between Freddie Brown, Adama Cefalu, and Niklas Gantenberg has evolved into one of Berlin’s most exciting and genre-fluid acts, completed in 2022 by bassist and multi-instrumentalist Leon Oranian. Rooted in their diverse backgrounds — English, American-Gambian, Afro-Brazilian and German — Prismala’s music bridges worlds to create a colourful whole.
After reconnecting in their hometown of Berlin in 2022, the band reignited their teenage promise to give music a proper shot. Their debut album It Gets Weirder (2023) captured the uncertainty and joy of early adulthood, earning recognition for its heartfelt lyricism and dynamic live performances, including a sold-out release show at Berlin’s renowned Renaissance Theater. Following a run of standout singles, increased radio play and memorable live shows throughout Germany in 2024, Prismala now open a new chapter with their upcoming EP For The Record – set for a release on 20 March 2026 via Hamburg-label FerryHouse. The 7-track record dives deep into questions of belonging, artistic identity, and creative purpose, showcasing Prismala at their most connected.
A detailed history of Prismala...
Prismala is the embodiment of long-standing friendships and deep connection – to each other and to music. What began as a high school dream between founding-members Freddie Brown, Adama Cefalu and Niklas Gantenberg back in 2016 has grown into one of Berlin’s most exciting musical collectives — completed in 2022 by bassist and multi-instrumentalist Leon Oranian. Together, they’ve shaped a sound that constantly moves between neo-soul, indie pop and alternative rock.
Rooted in their diverse backgrounds — British, Afro-Brazilian, American-Gambian and German — Prismala’s music is a conversation between worlds. It’s soulful but never slick, thoughtful but never heavy. Their songs invite you in with groove and warmth, only to reveal layers of honesty, vulnerability and quiet confidence.
While Prismala’s early discography was created during the band members’ separation due to studies, the band reunited in their hometown of Berlin in 2022 to honour their teenage promise of giving music a proper shot. What followed was the single Places To Be, marking a vibrant return while their 2023 debut album It Gets Weirder captured the growing pains and beauty of early adulthood with wit and warmth. The album’s release show at Berlin’s Renaissance Theater — the first rock concert ever held at the venue — became a defining moment for the band, celebrated in front of 500 attendees. In 2024, a string of standout singles including The King, Meditations, and Stella showcased their knack for catchy yet emotionally grounded songwriting, earning radio play and spots on major Spotify playlists. Closing the year, the dance-infused single A Way cemented their reputation for constant reinvention.
With their upcoming EP For The Record, the band open a new chapter: a reflection on belonging, artistic identity, and what it means to stay grounded while everything around you moves. Written together in their Berlin rehearsal space and brought to life in the Riverside Studios with producer jakohitsdifferent, the record captures Prismala at their most connected. The EP is set for release on 20 March 2026 with the first single It Might Rain available now.
On stage, Prismala is more than a band. They’re a circle of friends letting the audience in. Their live shows flow between intimacy and euphoria, building moments where laughter, stillness and dance coexist. Whether at the Reeperbahn Festival, Berlin’s Renaissance Theater, or their own Prismala & Friends concert series, every show feels like a gathering — a space where people, sounds, and emotions collide.
Since 2025, Prismala have joined forces with Hamburg-based label FerryHouse and Berlin-based Konzertbüro Schoneberg on booking duties. With an exciting EP set for release and substantial support, Prismala is set for an exciting 2026 and proving what’s been true since the very beginning: When you build on trust, friendship and groove, there’s no limit to how far the sound can travel.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the meaning of the name Prismala?
The name Prismala comes from a blend of the words “Prism” and “Mandala.” Like a prism splitting light into many colours, the band’s sound brings together its members wide range of influences – from soul and jazz to pop, funk and hip-hop. The “Mandala” represents an empty canvas which is intended to be filled with colour. Together, Prismala stands for diversity and the colourful beauty that happens when different elements become one.
How did Prismala form?
Prismala was formed by Adama, Freddie, Niklas and childhood friend Sebastian. The four met each other at the Nelson-Mandela primary school in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and quickly became best friends. As teenagers Freddie, Niklas and Sebastian played in the Indie-band ‘Kushtii’ – many shows saw their mutual friend Adama be part of the crowd. After graduating school in 2016 Kushtii’s singer left the project but Freddie, Niklas and Sebastian wanted to continue making music. After a few sessions of writing new material Sebastian suggested inviting Adama to try out as singer. Adama, up to this point, had never sung in front of anyone before and had only written a handful of lyrics to himself. No one could have expected what would happen at that first session. The long-lasting friendships instantly translated into an exciting musical project. And while Basti left the project in 2020, Prismala would not exist had it not been for his vision of inviting Adama.
What is the sound/genre of Prismala?
We are often described as painting with a palette of neo-soul, guitar pop, and alternative rock to craft a sound that’s as colourful as our journey. Prismala’s sound therefore lives somewhere between soulful warmth and danceable energy. It blends the groove of funk and hip-hop with the textures of indie, pop and jazz. The result is music that feels both intimate and uplifting: colourful, organic and full of movement.
